Interview with Hector Ballosteros, COL World elite lifter

In the Colombian national team’s trining hall for the 2010 South aMerican Games. Ivan takes a minute to interview Hector on his preparation, days before Hector goes on to win a silver medal.

Day 4

Women’s 75kg:
Ubaldina Valolyes of Colombia, after coming back from surgery, wins. Some good competition form Venezeula and Ecuador.

Men’s 105kg

Julio Luna lifts! We see the return of world champion Julio Luna, form VEN. He was quite under his best lifts, still doing an impressive 206kg.
Jorge Arroyo,a junior lifter from Ecuador, with a huge snatch, wins this category. Also, very lean and athletic lifter.

Women’s 75+kg
This was all Seledina Nieves of Ecuador. Seledina, at a 91kg bodywieght, was far ahead of the rerst of the competition and went after the South American Games record.

105+kg
Ecuador’s lifter, Julio Arteaga, who with beautifully smooth technique, won. He did give go at 228kg and missed the jerk.
Brazil’s Fernando Reis sqeezed into to 2nd with an all out 3rd attempt clean and jerk. Colombia’s Santamaria. showed great technique finishing in 3rd by one kilo behind Brazil.

Day 3- Leidy Solis of COL, 69kg, incredible lifting

As you know, we sponsor Leidy Solis. However, trying to speak objectively, she delivered the best performance, so far, of women’s lifitng in the Games.

She opened with an easy 104, then 108, then wicked easy 110kg snatch.  Clean and jerks were the same story. With all other lifters finished in distant second and thrid places, she opens with an easy 130kg.  Then an easy 135 then 138kg for good show.  The crowd was wild.  Even a Colombian  presidential candidate was in attendance to see Leidy lift.  Her performance was shown, again, on TV later that night.

248kg total in women’s 69kg.

Also of interest is the strategy used by the coach of the Argentinian lifter in 3rd place.  A lifter from Ecuador and Chile seemed to be battling it out for 3rd with each taking 110KG.  They both missed jertks, ecuasdor looked a lot stronger cleaning bothe Attempts.

BUT–  low and behold, an ARG lifter had an attempt left at 111kg.  How interesting. The coach let the other 2 lifters duke it out at 110kg and put his lifters attempt 1 kg higher. If either CHI or ECU were scuccessful, he could then raise his lifters weight to a higher  number. I think the other coached may have written off the ARG lifter, as her opener at 106 looked weak. But, she really brought it when 111kg was put on the bar!!

Brazialian  lifter in second almost bombed out. She only needed her openers to placxe a distant csecond from Leidy Solis.

Day 1& 2 South American Games

Day 1

Women’s lifting

48kg – Besti Rivas of Venezuela wins with around a 170 total

53kg- Great showing by Ecuador lifter totaling around  162kg.  Colombia locked up second place easily with 181.  Venezuala, winning with her opening clean and jerk, failed to jerk her second and third attempts. Her coach did not seem happy.  Interestingly, most lifters do not pass their thrid attempts when they have already one.    Totals ranged from 125kg to over 180kg.

Men’s lifting:

56kg – new international rule if not a full weight class is entered only 1st and 2nd place are rewarded. Feel bad for the would be bronze medalist in this class

62- Deigo Salazar does a light total to win

DAY 2

Women’s lifting:

58KG- Lifters break the 200kg mark

Colombians dominate, with good showing form VEN and Ecuador. Jackelina Heredia and newer Colombian lifter hit about 212+ total

63kg- Colombia dominates again with Mercedes Perez in close second to her COL teammate. Over 220KG total.

Men;

69kg – quite a few guys hitting double bodyweight snatches

Doiler Sanchez of colombia looked to be a win for sure.  However, missing a jerk, Venezuela was able to take advantage and  squeeze in a tight victory.

Shoe care

People have lifted over 400lbs in our shoes, for years with normal weasr in the shoes.  Even so, every product has its cryptonite.  The purpose of this post is to give you tips to extending the lift of your Risto shoes.

1. Keep them dry

Ever wear your leather jacket or leather pumps out in the rain? Needless to say, its not a good idea. Likewise, I wouldn’t leave my  guitar or violin out in the rain or in a humid or damp place.  Your Risto shoes are made of similarly high quality leather as dress shoes as well as authentic wood heels.  So, dont shovel snow or run walk in the rain with them.

2.  Lift on the heels, not the sides

The heel of the shoes are designed to take thousands of heavy repetitions– in compression– the same forces and motions performed when you lift. That being said, scraping the sides of the heels and uppers will wear your shoes out faster.  It is best to avoid loading the bar with your feet or adjusting the position of the bar on the platform with the heel of your shoe.   Gouging and scraping motions on the sides of the heel of the heel will wear the heel seam.  Abusing the heel seam can cuase separation of the rubber sole from the wood insert.  This should similarly be avoided on the leatje upper to maintain the beautiful finish.

3. Use them for their purpose

I would not walk around in ice skates nor would I walk around town in a pair of cleets.  Similarly, I would not go rock climbing in my lifting shoes. I For extended life of the shoes, change your shoes when you stop lifitng. OK, I admit it, a few times I erged in my lifting shoes, and I normally chage into my sneakers otherwise.  For maximum life, wear them only on the lifting platform.

Why are we selling supplements?

Supplements are one of the advantages that an athlete can take.  In the USA, we are fortunate to have high quality and relatively cheap assortment of supplements.  Having traveled to countries like Colombia, Bulgaria, Germany, Poland, or Romania, I can tell you that high quality supplements are very expensive and more difficult to find.

Here’s an example: Protein intake for an athlete is reccommended in ranges from .8g/kg bodyweight to 2g/kg bodyweight.   Now, if your goal is to get stronger and recover, but not gain weight, protein powders are one of the best ways to accomplish this.  How else can you get 25grams of protein crammed into a 150 calorie, delicious shake.

Finally, many of us are in USOC/USADA no advance notice drug testing or compete at drug tested events;ofcourse, one has to take supplements at their own risk.  Feel free to check with manufacturers on ingredients.   Still, as a business person, what incentives does a manufacturer have to put banned substances into low-carb whey proteins or fruit and nut bars?
